HCS SB 893 -- FIRE PROTECTION DISTRICT TAXES SPONSOR: Scott (Emery) COMMITTEE ACTION: Voted "do pass by consent" by the Committee on Local Government by a vote of 13 to 0. This substitute prohibits an ambulance or fire protection district from reducing the rate of the district's sales tax. Currently, the county collector is prohibited from reducing the district's sales tax. Any city, town, village, county, or fire protection district in St. Louis County that has implemented an ambulance or fire protection district sales tax is authorized to use those funds for expenditures on equipment and services, excluding salaries, wages, and benefits, by any city, town, village, county, or fire protection district which contracts with a joint central fire and emergency dispatching service. FISCAL NOTE: No impact on state funds in FY 2007, FY 2008, and FY 2009. PROPONENTS: Supporters say that the bill corrects an error in terminology because the taxing authority reduces taxes not the collector. Testifying for the bill was Senator Scott. OPPONENTS: There was no opposition voiced to the committee. Julie Jinkens McNitt, Legislative AnalystCopyright (c) Missouri House of Representatives
